In the west, it has taken us time to understand that mental health is something that you can work on as we do for physical well-being. Lifestyle changes that help in improving our physical well-being can also improve our brain health.
Which are some of these lifestyle changes?
1. Pay attention to your diet
Several studies show the correlation between what we eat and how we feel. The kind of food you eat will affect your memory, concentration, and mood. Majorly, this is brought about by the different nutrients contained in the foods that we eat. They will affect the hormones that are produced in the body. Some foods, especially organic, promote mental health.
Eating food rich in vitamin B, iron, zinc and magnesium enhances the brain function. Remember also to take glucose food such as sprouted bread that will help to balance your moods. Adding fruits and vegetables to your diet will provide vitamin B, a vital element responsible for managing depression.
2. Start Exercising
Studies show that exercise has many advantages to those who have mental health issues. Simple exercises like regular walking or jogging reduce depression as you grow old. Excises have improved the mental health of the people who have schizophrenia.
Research indicates that weight gain is a side effect of medication taken for mental illness. Exercising is the only way to remedy the situation.
3. Get more sleep
Sleeping well is essential for maintaining good physical and mental health. Non the less, a large part of the population suffers from sleep disorders. If you do not get enough sleep, it may result in stress, anxiety and the depression. Try to have a regular sleep routine. Avoid eating heavily before sleep. You can also keep away from the activities that prevent you from sleeping such as late night movies.
